CHAPTER SEVEN
The cheerful rays of the morning sun flooded into the eastern-facing window of Laneyâs bedroom, gently waking her from what had been a frustratingly fitful slumber. Sheâd forgotten to close her blinds the night before and was thankful â thereâs no telling how long she might have slept if nature hadnât turned the lights on. As it was, Carly and Stephen were probably already hard at work in the tearoom. That thought made her feel a bit guilty, but since she was already late, she figured there was no harm in checking out something that had come to her last night, just before she fell asleep. She could do a little digging now, and still be in the tearoom in plenty of time for Elevenses. Carly would be more than able to handle the early birds who liked to grab tea and pastries to-go on their way to work.
Today she dressed for tea, not for cleaning, in a mint green dress with a small bow to one side at the waist and a comfortable but fashionable pair of white pumps. Truthfully, Laney was more comfortable in jeans, but it felt nice to get dressed up occasionally, and frankly, she could use the added boost today, in light of recent events.
As she came downstairs, she heard the familiar sound of Stephen banging around in the kitchen. Then she heard something odd, that gave her pause - Stephen cursingâ¦loudly. That was completely out of character for the quiet young man, and it gave Laney goosebumps as she wondered what on earth had happened already this morning. Stephen was typically the most mellow person youâd ever meet. Nothing ever seemed to faze him, with the exception of a young photographer with a golden palate. It was sweet how excited heâd been to show her his quiches.
Striding quickly through the main room to the kitchen, Laney opened the door and immediately ducked when a projectile hit the door beside her. A bag of unshelled walnuts landed on the floor with a clacking crunch. Straightening to a standing position again, she could not believe her eyes.
The entire kitchen looked as though somebody had methodically disassembled it. The contents of every cupboard, cabinet, drawer, and container were now spread out across the tables, counters and even the floor. Stephen was crouched down in front of a storage cabinet tossing bags of various nuts and grains into a bin beside him.
âStephen!â Laney exclaimed, her voice a bit more strident than she had intended.
Stephen jumped up and spun around to face her, his expression akin to that of a feral animal that had snuck into the house and had been caught raiding the pantry. Almost immediately, however, his expression morphed back into that of the cool and collected Stephen that Laney knew. He tugged at the front of his white buttoned shirt to straighten it, ran his fingers through his hair, and re-tied his apron.
âSorry about all of this.â He spread his arms wide, gesturing to the mess and looking a bit sheepish.
